The Folks
Once home to 3096 brocade weavers, Fez is left today with a single artisan specializing in this art. He has been in the craft for the last 65 years since he was only 16. We collaborate with this master to create a luxurious collection of silk pillows and develop a lasting relationship aiming at helping save this endangered know-how and preserve it for generations to come.
The Tale
Brocade fabrics are handwoven using an extremely complex drawloom mechanism made up of a large wooden frame topped with beams, rafters, blades, pulleys, and counterweights. The loom is handled by two artisans who join forces to create the fabric, and it takes a day to produce one meter of the tapestry. This know-how has its roots at the beginning of the Marinid dynasty era, in the 13th century, when expensive brocade caftans were for royals only. These intricate shimmering silk fabrics, used for centuries to create beautiful caftans, are the hallmark of Moroccan fashion.
